This year has been widely declared a disaster from start to finish, with multiple celebrity deaths, the shooting of Harambe the gorilla and mobile phone explosions all making headline news.
Now amateur filmmakers have tried to provide some light relief, by creating a spoof trailer for a fictional movie that plays on all of the bad news of the past 12 months.
The 2016: The Movie trailer swept social media after it was posted to YouTube by US-based Friend Dog Studios, and was viewed more than 20 million times in less than a day.
The team reference several of the most shocking headlines of the past year in their comedy clip.
The two minute and 16 seconds trailer (a play on the year 2016, perhaps) starts out innocently, with a couple ringing in the new year together in high spirits.
The scene then becomes darker, and the female lead explains that things they never expected are happening everywhere.
As ominous background music gets louder, pictures of celebrities who have died this year appear tacked up on the walls.
