In further proof that certain corners of the internet are extremely awful, a hoax involving discounts at Starbucks for “undocumented Americans” has been debunked as completely fake.
As Buzzfeed reported, the hoax seems to have originated on 4chan on August 2, when an anonymous user posted the idea to “meme ‘Undocumented Immigrant Day’ at Starbucks into existence.”
The top commenter on the thread added the suggestion to “call ICE,” or US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
But one variation of one of the promotional flyers made the mistake of misspelling “Frappuccino” as “Frappacino,” and once that version circulated, people on Twitter began to get suspicious.
Starbucks has yet to release an official statement addressing the fake, racist promotion, but the company has responded to several tweets, clarifying they have nothing to do with the “Dreamer Day” discount and it is absolutely not a real thing.
