A California man was sentenced Thursday to more than four years in prison for a drunk-driving crash that killed his date.
Rafael Rangel, 23, drank beer at his house last August before going to pick up Dayazu Becerraric, 18, for what was supposed to be their first date.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office saidhe continued to drink as they drove to get dinner in Las Lomas, California.
While behind the wheel, Rangel misjudged a turn and sent his vehicle flying off a bridge.
Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to free the pair from the vehicle, which had landed on its roof. Officials said there were multiple alcoholic beverages scattered around the vehicle.
Becerraric was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rangel, who suffered multiple injuries, had a blood alcohol content of approximately 0.11, prosecutors said.
He was convicted for driving under the influence “causing great bodily injury,” according to the district attorney.
Rangel will be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of his sentence of four years and four months.
