Sri Lanka is to allow women over the age of 18 to legally buy alcohol for the first time in more than six decades.
As first reported by the BBC, the government announced Wednesday that it was amending an archaic 1955 law, agreeing that it was discriminatory against women.
In amending the law, Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera also announced he would lift the existing prohibition on employing females to work in places that sell alcohol without prior approval from the authorities.
A majority of Sri Lankan women traditionally choose not to consume alcohol as they see it as contrary to their culture. However many have taken to social media to praise the change.
