A 60-year old female was struck and killed by a garbage truck in front of horrified bystanders in Greenwich Village Tuesday night, police said.
The unidentified female was crossing sixth avenue when, according to witness, she was struck in the intersection of Sixth Avenue and West 8th Street before being dragged and crushed under the tires of the mammoth garbage rig.
Elana Abt was standing on the southeast corner of West 8th when she saw the impact.
“She basically got pulled underneath and it crushed her skull, you could hear everything break… I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing,” she said. “There’s no words to describe when you literally watch someone die.”
The ten-wheel Mack truck belonging to M&M Sanitation out of Newark, New Jersey. It remained on the scene Tuesday night as the NYPD’s Highway Division conducted an investigation.
The 60-year old woman was transported to Lenox Hill Healthplex, where she was pronounced dead, according to police sources.
