A Maine hardhat claims he fought off a bear with his bare hands as the beast mauled his dog.
Dustin Gray, 29, said he foiled the bear attack on Monday when his 11-month old lab mix was urinating off the side of the road and was attacked — leading him to fight the wild animal with his fists, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“I thought it was ready to eat me, like it was my turn,” Gray told the paper.
Gray said he punched and kicked the bear in an effort to stop it from biting the puppy — then delivered the knockout blow.
“I stuck my finger right in its eye,” Gray said.
The bear then took off, knocking over Gray in the process.
Gray was taken to the hospital for minor scratches and bruises while the pup was recovering from “significant puncture wounds.”
The Game Warden confirmed to the paper that there were traces of a bear living in the area where the attack occurred.
