Two and a half years after Detective Wenjian Liu, 32, was killed in the line of duty, the NYPD News announced his widow, Sanny Liu, gave birth to their child.
The night Liu was killed, Sanny requested the hospital preserve her husband’s semen so they could one day become parents, the statement explained. Through IVF, she was able to get pregnant late last year.
Dziergowski also told the paper both mom and “adorable, smiling, laughing” baby, whose name is Angelina, are doing well. Liu’s parents Wei Tang Liu and Xiu Yan Li were at the hospital for the birth of their grandson.
“Now, Detective Liu’s legacy can live on through his daughter,” the NYPD’s post concluded. “And as far as Detective Liu’s legacy goes, Sanny can’t wait to tell Angelina that her father was a hero. She is also eager to introduce her daughter to the New York City Police Department that she lovingly refers to as her ‘big blue family.’”
Liu’s partner Rafael Ramos was also executed on Dec. 20, 2014. The officers were shot to death while sitting in their squad car. Ramos’s widow Maritza started a foundation in his honor in 2015.
