Ohio police arrested 77-year-old James Allen this week after obtaining two Snapchat videos that allegedly showed him sexually assaulting his stepgranddaughter, NBC News reports. He’s been charged with rape.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office told NBC they’d been to Allen’s house earlier that day to perform a welfare check and, though they found a 20-year-old female intoxicated, believed everything appeared to be safe and left. The woman did not at any point report a crime. It was only when a friend of the same woman saw the videos on Snapchat and alerted the police to them did they return and arrest Allen.
Danbury Township Police Chief Michael S. Meisler told BuzzFeed News it wasn’t clear if the woman had recorded the Snapchats on purpose but that “she was able to capture the disturbing incident.”
“The most upsetting thing about this is that this is her stepgrandfather,” he continued. “He married her biological grandmother. He was the one who provided her with the alcohol that evening.”
Per the Toledo Blade, police are urging anyone who has the video from Snapchat to delete it immediately as they have a copy and “do not want to further victimize” the woman who recorded it.
Allen is being held on a $1 million bond.
